If you have ever looked up at a plane and wondered how it stays in the air, aerospace or aeronautical engineering may be your branch. And there is no better city in India to study it than Bangalore. The city is home to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) headquarters and the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), along with a growing number of private aerospace companies.
This guide covers the difference between the two branches, the Bangalore colleges that offer them, and how admission works for 2027.
Aerospace vs Aeronautical: what is the difference?
| Aspect | Aeronautical Engineering | Aerospace Engineering |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Aircraft that fly within the Earth’s atmosphere | Aircraft plus spacecraft, rockets and satellites |
| Core subjects | Aerodynamics, aircraft structures, propulsion, flight mechanics | All of these plus space dynamics and rocket propulsion |
| Typical roles | Aircraft design, maintenance, testing | Aircraft and space systems design, research |
In practice, the two overlap a lot, and graduates from both apply for similar jobs. Pick based on the college and curriculum rather than the name alone.
Bangalore colleges offering these branches
| College | Branch | Area |
|---|---|---|
| RV College of Engineering (RVCE) | Aerospace Engineering | Mysore Road |
| BMS College of Engineering (BMSCE) | Aerospace Engineering | Basavanagudi |
| Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering (DSCE) | Aeronautical Engineering | Kumaraswamy Layout |
| Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology (NMIT) | Aeronautical Engineering | Yelahanka |
| Acharya Institute of Technology | Aeronautical Engineering | Soladevanahalli |
| MVJ College of Engineering | Aeronautical Engineering | Whitefield |
| Dr Ambedkar Institute of Technology | Aeronautical Engineering | Mallathahalli |
| Global Academy of Technology | Aeronautical Engineering | RR Nagar |
These are specialised branches with smaller intakes than CSE or ECE, and seat counts change every year. Contact us to confirm 2027 availability. For more on the top colleges, see our RVCE guide, BMSCE guide, DSCE guide and the DSCE vs BMSIT vs NMIT comparison.
Eligibility and admission routes
- Eligibility: pass in 2nd PUC or Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics plus an eligible science subject, usually with at least 45% (40% for reserved categories).
- KCET: for Karnataka government quota seats.
- COMEDK: for private college seats open to students from all states.
- Management quota: for remaining seats at private colleges. See management quota fees, the documents required and mistakes to avoid.
Because intake is small, apply early if you have a specific college in mind. Fees vary by college and change every year, so contact us for updated details.
Career scope
- Public sector and research: organisations such as HAL, ISRO, NAL and DRDO labs recruit aerospace and aeronautical engineers, usually through their own exams or GATE.
- Private aerospace and defence companies: design, manufacturing, testing and analysis roles, many based in and around Bangalore.
- Aircraft maintenance and airlines: roles in maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) and airline engineering.
- Design and simulation: CAD, CFD and structural analysis roles in engineering services firms.
- Higher studies: MTech, MS or PhD in India or abroad, common for research and space careers.
Is this branch right for you?
Choose aerospace or aeronautical if you love physics and mathematics, enjoy design and problem solving, and are genuinely interested in aircraft or space. It is a demanding branch, and the best opportunities often go to students who build projects, join aero clubs and aim for higher studies or competitive exams. If you are also considering a broader core branch, read our Mechanical Engineering guide.
