KCET: The Cheapest Route, If You Qualify
KCET is conducted by the Karnataka Examination Authority and allots government quota seats across Karnataka’s engineering colleges. Its defining advantage is cost. Government quota fees are materially lower than every other route, including at top colleges like RVCE, BMSCE and MSRIT.
Take KCET if: you have Karnataka domicile and meet the eligibility conditions for government quota seats. There is no scenario in which a domicile student should skip it. Even a mediocre KCET rank can produce a seat that costs a fraction of the same branch through any other route.
The catch: domicile and eligibility conditions are strictly verified, and KCET alone limits you to the government share of each college’s intake. That share is small at the most in demand branches, which is why domicile students should still take COMEDK as well.
COMEDK UGET: The Main Route to Bangalore Private Colleges
COMEDK UGET is run by a consortium of private engineering colleges in Karnataka and is the primary merit route into the private seats at colleges across Bangalore. It is open to candidates from any state, which makes it the single most important exam for out of state students targeting Bangalore.
Take COMEDK if: you are targeting private engineering colleges in Bangalore, from any state. For Karnataka students it is the essential companion to KCET. For everyone else it is the main event.
What your score means: COMEDK is scored out of 180 across Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and your rank is relative to how the full pool of roughly 65,000 to 75,000 candidates performs. JEE Main: Useful, But Not the Bangalore Route
JEE Main is the national level exam conducted by NTA, primarily for admission to NITs, IIITs and centrally funded institutions, and it is the qualifying step for JEE Advanced and the IITs.
Take JEE Main if: national institutes are a genuine target for you, or you want a score that select private institutions will consider.
What it will not do: JEE Main is not the main admission route into most Bangalore private engineering colleges. Students who prepare exclusively for JEE Main and skip COMEDK frequently find, in June, that their strongest Bangalore options were behind an exam they never registered for. Two things are worth being clear about:
